Leafy Greens

November 1, 2022

The western vegetable industry continues to experience a series of challenges due to extreme weather and heavy disease pressure resulting in lower yields, short supply, and poor quality. In some extreme cases, growers are experiencing complete losses due to the INSV virus and weather-related issues on iceberg lettuce, romaine, romaine hearts and other leafy items.

Volume will continue to decrease until the transition to Yuma, Arizona in late November. This has significantly impacted markets in terms of price and growers are having to deviate from the normal quality we are accustomed to.

Many growers in Yuma could see the start of the season with light production. Many fields saw a loss of crops due to heavy rains during the early planting season. Expect lighter supplies to continue into early and mid-December as the harvests begin to catch up with demand.

This situation is causing extreme shortages of product. Brigiotta’s will continue to monitor the situation.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions, updated market information, or substitution recommendations.

We appreciate your patience and your business as we wait for the leafy green market to stabilize.
