Join Greenthumb Guru Allison Hurley as she breaks-down proper planting technique. From popping in a few annuals to planting a tree, get step-by-step instructions. Protect your investment, do it right and watch your garden grow!

June 2nd at 2PM: Landscape Design 101.

Building a landscape can be a daunting task.

What plants should I pick? How big should the flower beds be? Can a tree even go there? What is this going to cost me?

Whether you are starting from scratch or are renovating an existing yard, Greenthumb Guru Allison Hurley is here to help! In this lecture, we’ll discuss the basics of good design and ways to implement your vision for a beautiful garden. Bring photos of your yard for some suggestions on the spot.

July 7th at 2PM: Made in America: Native Plants

In this lecture, learn about what constitutes a native plant, how to incorporate them into your landscape, and what makes them critical to the preservation of our beautiful country. Tour the Garden Center with Greenthumb Guru Allison Hurley and bring home an American beauty.

August 4th at 2PM: Common Landscape Mistakes

Ever see a tree planted under a power line? Wondering why that plant just won’t grow? Feel like you are spinning your wheels when it comes to weeding? You might be surprised that with a little planning and understanding, the most common blunders in landscaping can be avoided. Greenthumb Guru Allison Hurley will discuss the most common mistakes and their solutions.

September 8 at 2PM: Soil

It is the foundation of the garden, but so often ignored when we perform maintenance in our yards. Just what is going on underfoot? If you are curious about the life beneath our feet and how to encourage it, join Greenthumb Guru Allison Hurley as she discusses Soil. You will learn how to assess your soil quality, how to build soil and compost, and the essential role soil creatures play in the health of our plants. Fall is a great time to get started, so join us as we get down and dirty with soil.

Allison is a sales associate and landscape coach at Brigiotta's Greenhouse and Garden Center. Hailing from Northeast Ohio, Allison has spent her life immersed in nature. 

She studied Biology at Muskingum College, New Concord, OH. Around this time, she secured a position at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in horticulture. 

In 2005, she and her partner Daniel decided to start a different kind of landscape company. Called "Simple Yard Care, LLC", the bicycle-based service provided design, installation, and maintenance focused on Native Plants, organic methods, lawn alternatives and sustainably-sorced materials.  

She continued to expand her experience by becoming an Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association (ONLA) Certified Master Technician, Certified Permaculture Designer and then Design Instructor. She studied soil biology with Dr. Elaine Ingham and native plant design at Phipps Botanical Garden, Pittsburgh, PA and at Holden Arboretum, Kirkland, OH, among others.

In 2021, Allison and Daniel decided to sell-off their business and house in Cleveland and re-settle here in Western New York. They currently live off-grid with their two dogs surrounded by forest. "
